People started writing haiku poetry hundreds of years ago. A haiku is a type of rhyme that started in Japan. It is pronounced “high-coo.” People in Japan used to say their prayers as a type of chant, and it is thought that this is where haiku comes from. Every word has syllables. Words that are short have fewer syllables than words that are longer. For example, “the” has one syllable, “po-em” has two syllables, and “won-der-ful” has three syllables. A haiku is written in a special way so that each line has a certain number of syllables. This is not as easy as it seems. A haiku is a three line poem. The first line in the poem has five syllables, the second line has seven, and the third line has five again. The total number of syllables for the haiku should be seventeen. Many times haiku poetry is written to describe nature or feelings, but it can be about anything. Since a haiku is so short, it describes what the writer is thinking or feeling in just a few words. Haiku poetry also does not usually rhyme, as some other types of poetry.
