American Bestseller: Judy Blume Popular author Judy Blume is well known for the books she has written for young adult audiences. Some of her most famous works include: Forever, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?, Blubber, and Tiger Eyes. She has also written novels for adults including, Wifey and Summer Sisters. Her writing career has endured for decades as both young and older readers continue to show their appreciation of Judy Blume's creative work.

In February of 1938, Judy was born to Ralph and Esther Sussman in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey. She loved reading stories as a child and that sincere interest followed her into adulthood. After high school, Judy studied for her degree in education at New York University where she met and married John Blume in 1959. Judy Blume had two children with her husband and continued to nurture her interest in creating stories. She took the opportunity to write while her children attended preschool classes and eventually attended some writing classes at the university. A few of her stories were published in magazines and her first picture book entitled, The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo, was published in 1969. Judy Blume's writing success really began to flourish in the 1970s with works such as, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Iggie's House, and Blubber. Forever, was the 2nd most challenged book in 2005. Judy Blume's young adult novels have been the source of some controversy throughout the years. Her young characters deal frankly with serious issues such as: sexuality, menstruation, and religion. Some of her books were left off library shelves and out of classrooms because of objections to their subject matter. Though some of Judy Blume's books faced censorship, she continues to attract a loyal following of young readers who appreciate her honest work. Furthermore, her books have sold over seventy million copies throughout the world.

Judy Blume has also had success at writing novels aimed at adult readers. It is likely that these novels are appealing to some of the same individuals who first read her work as teenagers. Judy Blume's long career as a writer is proof that her characters and stories are just as engaging now as they were over thirty years ago. She has proven her talent to create characters and scenarios that her readers can identify with.
